Speaking

Both halvesof the room

I speak at conferences, company events and business groups. Every talk has the same aim: to challenge how each person in the room sees their own position, and leave them with something to act on.

Most talks speak to the leaders or to the team.
Mine speak to both.

The owner and the people who work in the business sit through the same talk and walk out with different things. The owner leaves with a leadership question. The team leaves knowing their growth is in their own hands. Every talk below shows what each seat takes away, so you know what your room is getting.

Six talks

Each one is built around a single honest question. If you are not sure where to start, the first three suit most rooms. Run times are a guide, and every talk is shaped to fit the slot in your program.

Leading beyond the transaction

A working relationship is either transactional or it is real, and both sides decide which.

The quality of a working relationship is built from both ends, whether the team sits down the hall or in another country. I wrote this talk for businesses that work with teams offshore, and it holds just as well under one roof.

The leader's seat

“My team is a leadership responsibility, not a cost line. I have been leading it by accident.”

The team's seat

“I am not a function this business rents. I am part of it, and I decide how much of myself I bring.”

02

Married to comfortability

The ceiling is self-imposed, whether you own the business or work inside it.

Built around one uncomfortable question: what am I not changing, and therefore choosing?

28 min

The leader's seat

“The business stopped growing because I stopped growing. I mistook comfort for stability.”

The team's seat

“My role is a starting position, not a ceiling. What closes the distance is what I do every day, not luck.”

03

The rent you pay

Service, contribution, and why the people who give the most rarely end up with the least.

Muhammad Ali called service to others the rent you pay for your room here on earth. This is the most human of the six, and the one people keep talking about afterwards. It offers a different way to measure a career and a business: grateful for where you are, without agreeing to stay there.

30 min

The leader's seat

“This business is a vehicle for something bigger, and I have been measuring it by the wrong number.”

The team's seat

“Gratitude and ambition are not opposites. What I contribute is mine, whatever my title says.”

04

The ground is moving

Industries are rewriting themselves. What survives is the same answer for every seat in the room.

Disruption is arriving from both sides at once, and automation is coming for a lot of the work. This talk gives one honest answer about what cannot be replaced.

32 min

The leader's seat

“Preparing for disruption is a leadership question before it is a technology question, and my team is part of the answer.”

The team's seat

“I stay valuable by becoming the person whose judgement and relationships no tool can replace.”

05

You are only as good as you can communicate

The skill that decides whether anything else you know matters.

Practical control over how you are understood, across a screen, a time zone and a culture.

25 min

The leader's seat

“Instructions I thought were clear have been costing us output for years.”

The team's seat

“Speaking up and being understood is a skill I can build, not a personality I either have or don't.”

06

Trust over talent

Building a team that holds when the pressure arrives.

How to build a team that stays, and why the highest performer is not always the right person to keep.

28 min

The leader's seat

“I have been hiring for capability and losing people on trust.”

The team's seat

“Being someone the business can rely on is worth more than being the fastest, and it is within my control.”
